How to Prevent Hair Loss After Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

Hi, I’m Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics. Today we are going to answer some frequently asked questions from our patients.

Lisa from Honolulu, Hawaii, asks, “When my sister had her gastric sleeve surgery by another surgeon last year she lost weight but her hair started falling out and now she has thinning hair. What if this happens to me?”

Well Lisa, although hair loss, or thinning hair, can be a side effect of any bariatric procedure, typically it is because of malnutrition.

In our practice, at Blossom Bariatrics, we really educate our patients in the proper supplementation, vitamins, minerals, and other ways to get the nutrients you need for complete nutrition and to prevent hair loss.

I hope you found this information useful. If you have any additional questions, please visit us at

Until next time. Have a healthy day.

    Hi Michelle,

I will be meeting with Dr. Tom this Monday at 3:00pm for a consultation for a gastric sleeve/hitial hernia repair.

I have great hair. It’s my best feature. I am very worried about hair loss and how much is lost after the procedure and for how long?

My son is Chris Fiore and he worked there last Summer with your team. He told be about possible hair loss. He suggested I ask you about it to be fully informed.
