When I turned 60 last year I decided it was time to do something about my weight problem.  A combination of genetics, prescriptions, thyroid problems, and depression over chronic fibromyalgia and arthritis – combined with a love of good food (I’m a former restaurant owner!), added up to a weight gain over 20 years that took me from 150 to 230 pounds.  I can’t stress enough how hard life is when you’re fat.  It’s inconvenient, uncomfortable and embarrassing.  Clothing was just a way to hide things, and sometimes I just stayed home from events because I didn’t want to deal with it.  I knew two people who had gone to Dr. Umbach and had completely changed their lives.

It’s a fact that your metabolism gets out of whack each time you try to lose weight and then gain it back, plus some.  Pretty soon, even though you’re eating less than your friends, weight won’t come off, and it’s easy to simply give up. I was at that point.  Every single diet put me further away from being able to resolve the problem.  Although I was lucky to not have any health issues except for the pain, I knew that I would end up with arthritis in my knees and hips if I didn’t do something.

Surgery is not an easy thing, but Blossom Bariatrics specializes in weight loss procedures and has it down to the least invasive and least painful way.  I was impressed by how quickly I recovered and the fact that I lost 10 pounds in two weeks just on the pre-surgery diet!  In one year I lost 75 pounds.  The journey is made simpler by a smaller stomach and you appreciate food more.  Cravings actually physically change and I find that I thrive on a high protein, high fat diet with a few vegetables.  I eat REAL food.  (I always did, but I ate too much of it.)  Breakfast is a hard boiled egg and bakery french bread with peanut butter, lunch is Greek yogurt and fresh berries, dinner a protein and vegetable.  It’s simple and even eating out isn’t a challenge.  I love having leftovers in the fridge!

I hardly recognize myself.  I am comfortable in my body again. I love to dress up.  I bought a little kayak and I paddle around a local lake in the summer.  I am gregarious again.  I don’t feel like people are staring for the “wrong reasons”.  I haven’t needed any cosmetic surgery. My skin has reduced with my size.  My best friend said I had taken “20 years off my looks”.  That is a great compliment. And of course, my husband, who was always supportive, is very proud of me.

I recommend this to anyone who has given up and is ready for a change.  It is NOT a cure all.  You CAN expand your small stomach if you eat too much and consuming high calorie drinks will put you right back where you were.  But, the motivation that happens as you lose weight is an inspiration for staying that way!  Make this investment in your future.  Thank you Blossom Bariatrics for giving me back my life…..
