What Is It?

According to the American Society Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health, Roux-en-Y (pronounced ROO-en-why) gastric bypass surgery has been historically the most popular bariatric surgery in the United States.

During this malabsorption type procedure, Dr. Tom creates a small stomach pouch and then constructs a “bypass” for food. The bypass allows food to skip the large excluded stomach and the first part of the small intestine limiting the absorption of calories and nutrients. By absorbing less of the food you eat, you begin to dramatically lose weight. Gastric Bypass is often used as a method to treat morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and other comorbidities.
