Bariatric Surgery to Improve Medical Conditions

What to Expect With Your Weight Loss Surgery

My name is Mindi. I’m one of the wellness directors here with Dr. Umbach […] that facilitates you through the process, so I welcome you all here today.

What I’m going to talk about today is the procedure that you folks are getting ready to have. While I feel it’s important for me to teach this class, not only do I work for the doctor, but I had a gastric sleeve done and so I’ve been very successful with my surgery. So, hopefully my knowledge of the procedure will benefit you. So that’s what we’re going to go over.

I’m also going to go over the actual procedure itself. I’m going to tell you how it’s done. I’m going to show you the instruments that we use in surgery, to do the surgery, because a lot of people have never had surgery before and this really is a big deal surgery. It’s life changing.

I feel it’s very important in our office that we educate our patients as much as we can so they are comfortable going into the hospital, or to our surgery center next door.

We do our procedures here called laparoscopic, which means […w]e have five small incisions. Usually that’s for our revision patients to. We only have five incisions.

if you’re staying overnight in the hospital, obviously you have a nurse there looking after you, but if you’re going home same day surgery, which everybody next door I already know is, the biggest problem patients have after surgery is nausea vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, not deadly, but annoying, okay? They are annoying. We don’t want you to get dehydrated. That’s why everybody today is getting two bottles of this ClearFast drink. That’s going to help hydrate you, you know, the day of surgery. That’s going to help you a lot. But after surgery you need to try to drink as much as you can, so you are getting that hydration that you need.

The day of surgery, when it’s done, you start drinking your protein shakes. You start drinking clear water. You can add sugar-free stuff to your water, if you want. You can do sugar-free Gatorade. You can do popsicles, sugar-free Jello or pudding, Greek yogurt, broths, things like that. It’s crucial that you stick to the post-op diet that we have given you in your binders.

The biggest thing that I find that patients fall victim to is they weight themselves four, five, six times a day. Don’t do that, okay? First and foremost, you’re here for the number one reason is you want to get your health back. That’s what we promote here is health. Luckily for you you’re getting a surgery to get your health back and you’re going to lose weight, win win, right? That is what I want you to focus on.

You’re not alone. It was in 2010 that I had finally hit rock bottom with my weight. I was at 240 pounds. I couldn’t hold my joints and my knees and could not hold me up anymore and I was dying on the inside because I was this person trapped in a body that just wasn’t me. […] I said I need help. I can’t do it alone. I can’t go on. [My doctor] referred me to Dr. Umbach.
