Something I get asked quite a bit about is the inability to digest highly fibrous vegetables and proteins, not just red meat, but sometimes chicken, sometimes fish even, can affect sleeve and gastric bypass patients post surgery.

I don’t want you not to eat your protein. If you do get symptoms of, you know, indigestion, heartburn, burping after you eat, bloating, or if the meat feels like it sits like a little rock in your sleeve or your pouch, you may need to look into some digestive enzymes.

Digestive enzymes are merely enzymes that your pancreas normally produces, but you’re swallowing them before you eat so they’re there in your sleeve or your pouch before you eat your protein source. It really helps in aiding, breaking down the protein.

If you’re following it with your vegetables there’s digestive enzymes that help break down the cellulose, the hemicellulose, basically the fiber found in all vegetables.

So I highly recommend the Tummy Balance by Journey Bariatric. A lot of patients like the convenience of the chewable. You chew these before you eat. They’re very convenient.

Another popular brand is by Source Naturals here and they’re called Essential Enzymes and it’s a really good retail price point as well. This brand has been a favorite for a lot of my patients because you can throw them in your purse. They’re easy to take before you eat your meal, a couple of sips of water. They’re just capsules. Again, you’re going to be able to digest your food much easier.

I hope this information helps. Have a healthy day.
