Hi guys, Michelle Phelan here, Nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics and today I’m going to share with you some amazing tips and some awesome finds at the grocery store.
So today I want to talk a little bit about iron deficiencies. Typically it’s with gastric bypass surgery. That’s where you see a little bit more iron deficiency. It’s usually because it’s a mal absorption that can happen. There’s a couple of things to be aware of. Number one, you’re going to want to make sure you get your labs drawn at least three, six months, a year post surgery, to make sure that your iron levels are where they need to be. If they do show that you’re low in iron or ferritin, speak to your doctor. But there things to be aware of as a post-surgery bariatric patient. Number one, you do not want ferris sulfate. Ferris sulfate is not very absorbable and it can cause constipation. The ones that you do want of course would be something chelated. Chelation means that the iron is actually bound with salt or proteins so it’s more bioavailable to the body and it’s absorbed much like food for the body. So these are the products you’d want to utilize for an iron supplement.
Remember you guys, don’t take iron willy nilly. If you have fatigue or low energy, it’s usually from another reason. So make sure to get your labs drawn to make sure that you truly have low iron or low ferritin.
