How to Stay Slim After Bariatric Surgery

Hi, I’m Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics, and today we are going to answer some frequently asked questions from our patients.

Kenny from Palm Spring, California, asks, “My partner and I both had bariatric surgery in 2013 by the same surgeon. Jose lost more weight than I did and I am exercising more and eating healthier. Why is that?”

Well Kenny, sometimes when you get on that scale, you can be weighing much more due to increased muscle mass. Usually that is the culprit.

Some other things to take into consideration is you may be retaining some water. So, usually when you are working out hard and eating healthy, you should still be losing inches. How do your clothes fit? How do you feel? That is the important part.

I hope you found this information useful. If you have any additional questions, please visit us at

Until next time, have a healthy day.

Hello, I had the Gastric Sleeve in 2011 and it has been very successful. I have noticed in the last four months some of my old eating habits have returned. I have been obsessed with portion control and counting calories which has worked. Lately I have started eating more chocolate and cannot stop along with other foods. My ability to portion control is gone. What should I do?

Good video, answered a lot of my questions and prioritized diet and exercise vs surgery.
